Action Needed

Background

All NOW Actions

Read NOW President Kim Gandy's op-ed piece, "Stop Rape and Assault: And That's An Order!"

A National Disgrace: Stop Sexual Assault in the Military

Countless military women and military spouses are victims of sexual assault and domestic violence. It is estimated that rates of marital abuse in the military are two to five times higher than civilian rates of domestic violence. Moreover, one in three women in the military will be sexually assaulted during their tour of duty. Ending sexual violence against women in the military must start now!

Action Needed:

Act now to support the Military Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Response Act to address this national epidemic and stop the violence against military women and military families!

Take action NOW!

Background:

On Feb. 3, Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-N.Y.) reintroduced the Military Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Response Act (H.R.840). The bill works to reduce violence against military personnel and their families by enhancing programs of prevention and deterrence, improving victim services, and strengthening provisions for prosecution of assailants.

If passed, this law will establish a Victims' Advocate Office within the Department of Defense (DoD) which will be responsible for assessing the services provided to military personnel who are victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking. In addition, the bill directs the Secretary of Defense to ensure that every branch of the military provides victims' advocate programs and violence prevention training.

The Military Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Response Act protects victims by prohibiting retaliation for reporting assaults and calls for the employment of a sexual assault nurse examiner, psychiatrist, and clinical team at each DoD treatment facility. It also provides court-martial punishment for violations of "no contact" orders or protective orders.

Take action NOW!

Please contact your U.S. Representative and urge immediate sponsorship of the Military Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Response Act (H.R.840). The bill currently has 30 House sponsors and we need to at least triple this number so that the bill can have a committee hearing and proceed to the House floor for a vote. The passage of this legislation is a crucial step towards ensuring the safety and wellbeing of military personnel and their families, so take action now!

Dear crisci,

You may be familiar with case of actor Dennis Quaid, whose infant twins almost died when they were injected with a massive dose of blood thinner. The adult and baby doses were similarly packaged, leading to the mix-up. Quaid went public, and the hospital installed a computerized medication system to prevent future errors.

But most medical errors are kept secret. Ten years ago, the Institute of Medicine called for immediate action to end errors like this but very little progress has been made since then. Every year our leaders ignore these errors, another 100,000 Americans needlessly die and $17 billion is spent treating them.

Sign our petition to stop the secrecy and prevent medical errors. Help us push for less talk and more action!

Your money, your priorities
Congress votes this week on a budget blueprint to get us more affordable, reliable health coverage. But some want to ignore the health care problem and push it down the road -- just like they did with our financial troubles. Tell Congress to open their eyes and make a down payment on health reform.

Stop runaway financial greed
Billions of our tax dollars have bailed out the lending industry, but loopholes let some operators charge 400% interest for certain types of loans. It’s the financial “Wild West,” and there’s no sheriff in town. Tell Congress to bring responsibility back to our financial system.

Slash your prescription drug costs
Tired of ‘sticker shock’ each time you pick up a prescription? Learn about affordable alternatives to high priced medicines at Consumer Reports Health, or order the new Best Drugs for Less magazine that can help you save big $$$ on prescriptions.

Had food poisoning?
If so, we want to hear your story. Our leaders are finally getting serious about food safety now that nine people died from eating tainted peanut products. We want to make sure they know what’s really happening every time you eat. Tell us your food poisoning story.

Share your experience!

Dear Lynn,

Help pass the 21st Century ALERT Act.

Our goal: 40,000 signatures.

That's one for every woman who will lose their battle with breast cancer this year.

Urge your senators to support the ALERT Act today!

Last week we witnessed an important milestone in the fight against cancer with the introduction of the 21st Century Cancer ALERT (Access to Life-saving Early Detection, Research and Treatment) Act (S.717), a critical bill that will strengthen cancer research, emphasize early detection, and improve cancer care for underserved populations.

Over 13,000 Komen advocates have already taken action to support this bill, but we need your help if we're going to reach our goal of 40,000 signatures – one for every woman who will die from breast cancer this year.

Add your voice to the call to action – urge your senators to pass the ALERT Act.

Members of Congress are heading home for recess this weekend, which means the real fight has just begun. Over the next two weeks our senators will lay out their legislative priorities for the year in their own states and we have a small window to make sure passing the ALERT Act is at the top of their lists.

The ALERT Act will reignite the war on cancer by putting an emphasis on:

  • Increasing access to early detection methods available today and encouraging discovery of the early detection methods of tomorrow;
  • Strengthening and streamlining the cancer research process to more quickly and efficiently discover and deliver the cures for cancer; and
  • Improving access to treatment for underserved populations.

Senators Edward Kennedy and Kay Bailey Hutchison have made passing the ALERT Act a priority for 2009, but we need to act fast to make sure ALL our senators know that passing this bill is OUR priority.

Click here to urge your senators to support the ALERT Act now and help us reach 40,000 signatures!

As a dedicated Komen advocate, you know the harsh realities of cancer. 40 percent of Americans will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lives. 1.4 million new cases of cancer will be diagnosed this year alone. And last year, cancer claimed the lives of more than 1,500 people a day.

It's time to unleash the amazing power of science, technology and medicine to discover new ways to detect cancer as early as possible – earlier than we can currently imagine. As we do, we must also ensure that everyone has access to the screening and treatment options that exist today.

Let's take advantage of the momentum that has brought the 21st Century Cancer ALERT Act this far. Click here to take action TODAY.

Together, we can achieve our goal of one day ending suffering and death caused by cancer.

CALL YOUR SENATORS: The Medical Device Safety Act (MDSA) would restore the rights of Americans who have suffered due to defective medical devices!

URGENT: CALL YOUR SENATORS AND REPRESENTATIVES

On Tuesday, March 31, 2009, victims harmed by dangerous medical devices and their families will be in Washington, DC, to meet with members of Congress about HR 1346/S 540, The Medical Device Safety Act (MDSA), legislation that would restore the rights of thousands of Americans who have suffered or even died because of defective medical devices, like heart defibrillators, artificial valves, and prosthetic knees and hips, to seek justice through the civil justice system.

Last year, the Supreme Court ruled in Riegel v. Medtronic that manufacturers of class III medical devices that have been approved by the FDA’s pre-market approval process are essentially immune from liability. The Riegel decision is the subject of the MDSA that would restore injured patients’ right to seek justice in the courts when medical devices have failed, and in some instances, have even been recalled. This legislation follows the Supreme Court’s decision earlier this year in Wyeth v. Levine that held federal law does not preempt state-law claims with regard to drug warning labels.

Please support their efforts by lighting up the switchboards on Capitol Hill today, March 31st, and ask Congress to support HR 1346/S 540,the Medical Device Safety Act.

EMAIL CONGRESS HERE to Co-Sponsor the Breast Cancer Education and Awareness Requires Learning Young (EARLY) Act of 2009 Increase Women's Survival Now

action alert

Help increase survival for young women with breast cancer.

Urge your representative to support the EARLY Act.

Click here to write Congress TODAY.

As a dedicated Komen activist, you know that one in every eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.

What you may not know is that when breast cancer occurs in women under the age of 40, it is often detected at later stages, is more likely to be aggressive, and may be less responsive to hormone therapies.

Despite these facts, there is a lack of awareness about the risks and unique challenges facing young women with breast cancer. A new bill just introduced in Congress would change that.

Click here to urge your members of Congress to co-sponsor the Breast Cancer Education and Awareness Requires Learning Young (EARLY) Act of 2009introduced by Representatives Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) and Sue Myrick (R-NC).

Today, Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz revealed that she is a breast cancer survivor and has undergone seven major surgeries in little over a year since her diagnosis, while continuing to serve as a member of Congress. Please join me in applauding Congresswoman Wasserman Shultz for taking her personal battle against breast cancer public in an effort to shine a light on the issues young women face.

This issue is very personal to me – my own sister Suzy, for whom Susan G. Komen for the Cure® is named, was diagnosed with breast cancer at just 33. When she died at the age of 36, I promised her I would do everything in my power to end breast cancer forever. I was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 37. We know so much more now than we did then. But still, so many young women do not understand the risks, and so many providers do not understand that young women can get breast cancer.

Young women with breast cancer struggle with many issues that women who are diagnosed with breast cancer later in life may not face. And because diagnosing breast cancer in young women can be more difficult, these women often don't learn about their disease until it is in advanced stages and more life threatening.

The EARLY Act will address these unique concerns in three key ways:

  • Public education. The bill will provide funding for an aggressive public education and media campaign targeting young women, with an emphasis on women under age 40 who are at higher risk due to their race, ethnicity or genetic heritage.
  • Resources for health professionals. Through additional training, health care professionals will be more aware of the risk factors, the opportunities for genetic counseling and testing, and the unique challenges that face young women diagnosed with breast cancer.
  • Support services. Younger women face additional strains including an increased impact on their dating lives, careers and ability to have children. This bill will address these concerns by providing grants for support services for young women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer.

When breast cancer is detected early, the five-year survival rate is 98 percent. But because many younger women are diagnosed at later stages with more aggressive breast cancer, their survival rate is lower. With increased awareness for genetic counseling and testing, early detection, and treatment, we can improve the odds. But we need your help.

Please take a moment to write your representatives today and urge them to support this important bill.

Thank you for all that you do. Together we can one day end the suffering and death caused by cancer.

Sincerely,

Lynn JULIAN & Ambassador Nancy G. Brinker

TELL CONGRESS: STOP CITIGROUP BAILOUT & Don't Use Taxpayer Money to LOBBY against Middle Class Labor Unions Like WALMART! EMPLOYEE FREE CHOICE ACT

Dear lynn,

Luxury Jets.

Executive Bonuses.

Lobbying against the Employee Free Choice Act.

Is that how you want Citigroup spending YOUR tax dollars?

Tell Congress to put a stop to it!

Congress authorized a $750 billion bailout so banks could keep lending money to struggling Americans and fix our economy.

Citigroup took $45 billion in bailout money. Without that money, they'd be bankrupt. But like AIG, Citigroup has no shame. Instead of making loans to Americans who desperately need them, they're spreading lies about the Employee Free Choice Act.

Tell Congress to put an end to bailout waste – and demand Citigroup stop using taxpayer money to lobby against the middle class.

How is Citigroup using bailout funds against working families? Last week, Citigroup hosted a conference call in which the U.S. Chamber of Commerce attacked the Employee Free Choice Act. And a Citigroup analyst recently lowered expectations for Wal-Mart stock. They claim that the retail giant's employees could form more unions if the bill passes.1 And they think that's bad for Wal-Mart's future earnings.

But we know the Employee Free Choice Act will help rebuild the middle class and grow our economy. This economic collapse has proven that low wages and corporate excess are the road to ruin.

So why is Citigroup really fighting this bill so hard? Simple. Companies like Citigroup and AIG have already proven they'll suck as much money as they can from the rest of us, even if it destroys our entire economic system and America's middle class.

After all, if more money went to workers, how could Citigroup pay out $10 million in bonuses to its CEO,2 spend $13 million to "compensate" employees for cancelled trips to tropical resorts,3 or give $68 million in severance to its former CEO who oversaw the subprime mortgage deals that helped create this recession?4

Tell Congress: A majority of Americans want the Employee Free Choice Act – don't let Citigroup use bailout funds to lobby against us!

This makes me just furious! I hope you'll join me by taking action today and sending this to all your friends.

Sincerely,

Liz Cattaneo
American Rights at Work

P.S. Just to be crystal clear on the timeline here:

  1. Citigroup helps decimate our economy by gambling on shady subprime mortgage deals.
  2. Citigroup comes to the government for a $45 billion bailout from OUR tax dollars.
  3. Citigroup – which would be bankrupt without taxpayer money – engages in scare tactics and lobbying against the Employee Free Choice Act.

Click here to tell Congress that is unacceptable!

P.P.S. Today, actions against corporate excess are happening all around the country. You can find an event near you here:

Urge President Obama & Congress to include Cancer Funding in the 2010 Budget! Breast Cancer SUSAN B KOMAN Activists RACE FOR THE CURE Be A Hero

action alert

Dear Lynn,

This week, President Obama made a pledge to:

"...launch a new effort to conquer a disease that has touched the life of nearly every American, including me, by seeking a cure for cancer in our time."

Tell Congress to honor that pledge by including cancer funding in the federal budget!

This is a critical time for cancer funding. Yesterday, President Obama presented his budget to Congress for the upcoming fiscal year. His proposal would dramatically boost funding for cancer research and now we need Congress to support it!

Urge Congress to include critical cancer funding in the 2010 budget!

Tuesday night, during his speech to Congress, President Obama pledged to:

"...launch a new effort to conquer a disease that has touched the life of nearly every American, including me, by seeking a cure for cancer in our time."

But, if our leaders in Congress fail to include critical funding for cancer provisions in the federal budget, we will fail to meet the promise of the President's pledge. That's why we need your help.

Please write your leaders in Congress and tell them you support funding for cancer initiatives in the 2010 budget.

Last year during our I Vote for the Cure campaign, over 100,000 dedicated Komen Activists took action – demanding that our leaders make ending breast cancer a national priority. Thanks to those efforts, the government included additional funding for cancer research in the economic recovery package.

This was a good first step, but the stimulus funding is temporary. In order to ensure we realize the dream of one day finding the cures for cancer, we must make permanent provisions that will:

  • Increase investments in science and research. The economic stimulus package boosted funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and National Cancer Institute (NCI). While this reverses a six-year trend of declining budgets, this temporary investment must be matched by a long-term commitment to clinical research.
  • Close the gap in access to early detection services. Current funding for the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program allows less than one in five eligible women to be screened for cancer. Additional funding will help thousands more women receive potentially life-saving screening services.
  • Help patients navigate the U.S. health care system. The Patient Navigator Program helps patients navigate the often complex and confusing health care system. This important program helps coordinate care between general practitioners, radiologists, oncologists and others. However, under-funding threatens this key component in care and treatment for cancer.

Congress will debate and vote on the budget soon. Click here TODAY and urge our leaders to include vital cancer funding in the new budget.

Thanks for all that you do. Together, we can one day end the suffering and death caused by cancer.

Sincerely,

Martina A. Hone

EMAIL CONGRESS: Open Our Airwaves to Low Power FM (LPFM) Radio Stations & Give Everyone a chance to Break Into Radio! The Local Community Radio Act

I signed this to open up some of our airwaves & make local radio stations "by the people and for the people."  Strength through unity!  *smile*  Julian aKa CCG Pop Superhero

Free Press Action Fund: Action Alert

Stop the Static.
Open the Radio Dial Now.

Are you sick of hearing the same talk radio blowhards and cookie-cutter music on the radio in Ipswich?

By passing one bill, we can open the radio dial to more than a thousand stations with fresh new voices and alternative music, ending decades of radio domination by Big Media and their mouthpieces.

The Local Community Radio Act of 2009 (H.R. 1147) was just introduced in the House. The Act nearly passed in the last Congress with the support of more than 100 members -- including Rep. John Tierney.

With just a little urging from you, Rep. Tierney will support the bill in this Congress and help usher in a new era of better radio:

Tell Congress to Open Up the Radio Dial

This Act would open up the airwaves to more Low Power FM (LPFM) radio stations, giving people across the country a chance to break into radio. It would bring thousands of new voices to a radio dial that’s too often a megaphone for Big Media.

Please get Rep. Tierney on board by clicking below and signing the letter:

Dear Rep. Tierney: The Time for Better Radio Is Now

Rural communities from Ringgold, Ga., to Woodburn, Ore., have benefited tremendously from their own LPFM stations, which bring local perspectives, music, news and information to the public airwaves.

The Local Community Radio Act would open urban areas to local radio, too. Organizations like the Chicago Independent Radio Project, which promises to restore local independent programming to the radio dial, are ready to go -- but they need your help.

A few companies have dominated the radio dial for too long, muting the voices of so many others. Make sure that Rep. Tierney makes better radio a reality now.

BE A PET HERO! Support State Legislation to Protect Pets in Domestic Violence Protective Orders! The Pets of 70% of Abused Women are Tortured+Killed!

care2 petitionsite actionAlert

A national study revealed that the pets of over 71 percent of battered women are threatened, tortured or even killed.

This statistic is shocking and unacceptable. Sign today to include pets in state legislation on domestic abuse.

A domestic violence protective order is a court order that can command an abuser to stop harming and contacting the domestic violence survivor. Encouraging judges to include pets in these orders is critical toward combating the cycle of domestic violence and empowering survivors and their pets.

Progress has been made, but the dire plight of pets caught in domestic violence situations is still not recognized by the law in 40 states.

Please support state legislation to include pets in domestic violence protective orders!

EMAIL CONGRESS & DEFEND YOUR DOLLARS! Tell Congress to HELP Americans SAVE their homes FROM FORECLOSURE! BANKS GET BILLIONS OF YOUR TAX MONEY!

Consumers Union

Fed up with the giant financial institutions getting billions of our tax dollars, but doing next to nothing to help homeowners save their homes from foreclosure? If so, you can make a real impact right now!

Every 13 seconds another home goes into foreclosure, and as a result, neighborhoods get blighted and your home value decreases. Washington is considering measures that would allow homeowners facing bankruptcy to restructure their mortgages and stay in their homes, and to ensure the next round of bailouts really helps Americans facing foreclosure.

Tell Congress to give Americans help right now to save their homes!

Home mortgages are the only debt that can’t be modified in bankruptcy court, forcing into foreclosure hundreds of thousands of struggling homeowners who want to keep their houses.

The proposed bankruptcy legislation won’t cost taxpayers a cent, and it won’t excuse families from paying their mortgage. Rather, it would simply give bankruptcy judges the authority to modify loans when homeowners have exhausted other options to avoid foreclosure. Currently, the courts can modify all sorts of loans for owners of big corporations, commercial real estate, even those with vacation properties, but they can’t do the same for families on the verge of losing their only home.

So far, the largely voluntary efforts to get banks to restructure mortgages aren't working, despite huge infusions of taxpayer cash. And some of those financial institutions who got us into the mortgage mess are now lobbying against this helpful change!

Make sure Washington hears from you; not just from the big banks!

Take action, and then please forward this on to family, friends and neighbors who also are concerned about the effect of this mortgage crisis on their home values.

Make Congress Join President Obama & Pass the Employee Free Choice Act! Vote for Paid Overtime,Wal-mart,American Idol employees,FedEx Ground drivers

Now that this historic election is over, we have an unprecedented opportunity to restore our struggling middle class with good, union jobs. And President-elect Barack Obama is ready to lead the charge:

"I've fought to pass the Employee Free Choice Act in the Senate. And I will make it the law of the land when I'm President of the United States of America." - President-elect Barack Obama, 4/2/08.

We need to make sure our new leaders in Congress join President-elect Obama and make passing the Employee Free Choice Act a top priority.
Lawmakers read their local newspapers closely to get a sense of what's important to their constituents.
Write a letter to the editor and make sure they feel the pressure to pass this critical bill soon!

You know the Employee Free Choice Act will make a difference – that's why you joined with 800,000 Americans to show your support for this important bill.
Just take a look at the FedEx Ground drivers who work long hours without overtime or benefits, and are harassed or fired for supporting a union. Or the American Idol employees who take home as little as $4.50 an hour while the show enjoys huge profits. Or the Wal-Mart employees who faced intimidation for supporting pro-worker candidates and retaliation for trying to form a union.

They're waiting for change. They're waiting for the Employee Free Choice Act.
This bill has been before Congress before, but with a new Congress and support from Barack Obama, 2009 represents our best chance in years to advance this legislation. We're close to our goal of one million signatures, and if we keep this issue front and center in the media, we can show our new leaders just how important this bill is to their constituents.
Help us keep our momentum going – send a quick letter to your local paper TODAY!

The same anti-union groups who spent millions to defeat pro-worker candidates in the election will continue to spend money and put pressure on our leaders to defeat this bill. We have to keep working hard if this bill is going to become a reality. That starts with your letter to the editor today.

Thank you for all that you do.
Sincerely,
Liz CattaneoAmerican Rights at Workwww.americanrightsatwork.org

Please speak out now >>

The Bush Administration wants to weaken America’s strongest wildlife protection law. We need your urgent action to stop this latest and most dangerous attack on endangered species. Please tell the Interior Department to reverse course and protect imperiled wildlife.

The Interior Department has announced plans to undermine the Endangered Species Act by putting the responsibility of wildlife protection in the hands of federal agencies with little or no interest in protecting wildlife. The proposal would eliminate many current safeguards, including the routine scientific review of any agency action that may pose a threat to federally protected wildlife. These sweeping changes would have dire implications for gray wolves, polar bears, whales and countless other imperiled wildlife that take refuge in Greater Yellowstone, Alaska’s Tongass rainforest and other prized U.S. wildlands. We need your help to make sure the Bush Administration’s dangerous plan never goes into effect. If finalized, it could threaten the very survival of some wildlife populations.

Please send a message urging the Bush Administration to drop its plan to weaken the Endangered Species Act. Thank you for defending our nation’s endangered wildlife.

Sincerely,Frances Beinecke PresidentNRDC Action Fund
