OK...So people have been saying “The End Is Near” for decades now. We all waited in anticipation for May 21 2011, but nothing happened. Yet, after suffering through a long line of floods, tropical storms, tornadoes and hurricanes this year, “The End” feels a little closer than before. The new date for the “End Of The World” Rapture is October 21 2011. I’m not saying “It’s The End Of The World As We Know It,” I simply feel we ought to be better prepared for these natural disasters. NO...I’m not talking about hoarding more bottled water, dry goods, flashlights, batteries and radios. I don’t want to simply survive. I want to escape death. In order to do this, I’ll need a Superhero style vehicle. I’m talking about one of the top twenty best cars to survive the apocalypse...LET THE RAPTURE BEGIN!
20. Sportsmobile
I’d call this the “minimalist’s survival vehicle.” The Sportsmobile 4X4 will cross almost any terrain, store an arsenal of weapons, food and equipment, and bring your bail out vehicle (BOV) and camping gear with you. For all you animal lovers, it can even be fitted with a kennel for man’s best friend...or zombies...or your spouse...when they misbehave. [sportsmobile.com/4_4x4sports.html]
19. Volvo C303
The Volvo C303 may lack the complex mechanical and electronic components of other Apocalypse vehicles, but...I read it can be kept running with duct tape and shoe polish. Some say, “what do you need an onboard toilet for in a world where global war has rendered societal norms, such as not peeing in anywhere, nil?” Personally, I’m holding out for something with an indoor bathroom. It’s just too undignified to die taking a dump. [Real4x4.com]
18. Earthroamer XV-JP
If you’re one of the lucky few survivors left on Earth, the Jeep-based Earthroamer XV-JP has got you covered: it’s portable (the only camper to ever cross the Rubicon trail) and it’s top folds out into a queen-sized bed. Simply load this puppy up with weapons, dry goods & toilet paper. There’s no bathroom in it...but that will be the least of your worries by that time. [Earthroamer.com]
17. Dobbertin Surface Orbiter
The Dobbertin Surface Orbiter was designed to circumnavigate the globe on land and water, so bring it on, Global Warming! (Also handy for the quick change seasons brought on by nuclear fallout.) This creative, amphibious vehicle was built out of an old milk tanker, and comes complete with a kitchen and porta-potti. (Let’s face it, the bathroom IS the most important room in the house!) This milk can nearly made it all the way around the world, but suffered financial problems and an untimely divorce. GOT MILK? *smile* [dobbertinhydrocar.com]
16. Cool Amphibious Manufacturers International Terra Wind
Some say "Come hell or high water,” but what happens when you’re left with BOTH? You float off in the MEGA HUGE Terra Wind, (43 feet long and almost 16 tons) RV. “Prepped for aqueous and dry duty, a 330-horsepower Caterpillar engine drives the standard wheel arrangement, or, through a separate transmission, twin 19-inch bronze propellers.” All the while, you’ll be luxuriously living it up in leather, teak, marble, plush carpeting and a 42-inch plasma TV. Better stock up on those Bear Grylls survival show DVD sets...
15. EM-50 Urban Assault Vehicle
The EM-50 Urban Assault Vehicle was featured in the classic Patriotic American film, Stripes starring Bill Murray. Is it a “real car?” I saw the movie, and it looks plausible to me!
How will this help you after the Apocalypse Rapture? You’ll be a HERO when you drive straight into the alien war zone, rescue survivors, and then set fire to the enemy invaders’ get away vehicles. Your new friends can thank you by cooking you a lovely meal inside the TGIF-esque interior. Oh yes, you’ll still be the posh party host I *know* you are!
Secret and stealth, this appears to be your standard issue GMC-based RV with all the amenities. SURPRISE, SURPRISE, SURPRISE...with one touch of a single button, the armor goes down and out come the missiles. BONUS: It also features full navigational and communications equipment. Wait...Does Bill Murray’s come with it? NOW, IT’S A PARTY!
14. MaxiMog
the MaxiMog started life as the Mercedes Unimog before it was converted for full survival duty. Don’t be fooled by it’s name, this red headed step-child of society features a high-performance motorbike BOV, undersea vehicle and a special living trailer. BONUS: it includes a UAV that can send live images of incoming attacks from up to ten miles away!
13. 1959 Daimler Ferret Armored Scout Car
The 1959 Daimler Ferret Armored Scout Car features a Browning M1919 machine gun, smoke grenade launchers, periscopes, tents, canteens, a first-aid kit, and just about everything else you'd need to beat a retreat into wilderness. The Ferret shares its 4.3-liter inline-six engine with various Rolls-Royces and Bentleys from the '40s and '50s, making the hunt for it’s spare parts only slightly less impossible. HINT: Stock up on spare parts NOW!
12. Sisu XA-185
The Sisu XA-185 army tank made the list of survival vehicles for
four good reasons: it’s amphibious 6x6, it’s zombie proof, it’s got a mounted NSV machine gun and a decent diesel engine (diesel engines are versatile with fuel). [ArmyVehicles.dk]
11. The Buffalo Force Protection VehicleFull size
What can crush a Hummer, clear a minefield and keep you safe from survivors trying to kill you over oil or fresh water. The Buffalo Force Protection Vehicle! Lots of leg room, but I’d install some custom seats for those long drives ahead. This bad boy comes with a space shuttle-like mine raking arm. If you look closely, it may even transform.
