Within Japan, 71 percent of people oppose the country's taxpayer-subsidized whaling program. And it's no wonder, since the sham program that targets endangered and threatened whales is a source of international tension for Japan.
All of the signs point to a whaling industry that's both in disarray and frustrated by the progress of the anti-whaling movement. For example, when Greenpeace activists Junichi and Toru discovered and turned in a stockpile of illegal whale meat to the Japanese authorities, the Public Prosecutors' Office subsequently arrested them for trespass and theft. This ridiculous charge is clearly a sign that the government is trying to intimidate and silence dissent.
But the fight must intensify. Junichi and Toru (now named the Tokyo Two) were held for 26 days without charge. They are now out on bail, but still face criminal prosecution and up to ten years in prison. These two activists have unearthed a dark underbelly of the whaling industry, and the Japanese government has yet to investigate this corruption.
The Japanese whalers still hunt whales under the guise of scientific research. But the recent discovery by the Tokyo Two shows that whale meat is being smuggled ashore for sale by the crew of the whaling ship. This despicable practice continues despite the fact that only five percent of Japanese people eat whale meat regularly.
Thank you for helping save precious whales.
